The 2D replay got view cones, zoom and a full-width map

TL;DR

The 2D replay now draws a view cone for every living player, zooms up to 6×, plays down to quarter speed and marks every kill and bomb plant on the timeline. The map fills the width, with the score and round clock above it, and any moment can be shared as a link.

The whole-match 2D replay went live on Aug 27. A day later we rebuilt the viewer, after going through other 2D replay tools and writing down what they did better. Most of that list shipped the same day.

View cones

Press C, or the view cones button, and every living player gets a 90° cone in the direction they faced. Cones are on by default when you open a replay that follows one player. Each cone is drawn from the view angle stored in the demo, so it shows where a player was pointed, through smoke and walls. It can’t tell you what was on their screen, and the 90° width is a fixed shape, the same for everyone.

For cheat review this is the part that matters. You can watch whether someone’s aim keeps following an enemy they had no way of seeing.

Finding the moment

  • Every kill and the bomb plant sit as marks on the timeline. Click one to jump to 2 seconds before it.
  • A dashed line joins killer and victim at the moment of each kill.
  • Speeds run from 0.25× to 4×. The slow end is the useful one for checking aim.
  • Zoom from 1× to 6× with the mouse wheel, a pinch or the zoom buttons. Drag to pan, double-click to reset.
  • Copy link to this moment gives you a URL that opens the replay paused on that round and second.
  • Space plays and pauses, the arrow keys skip 2 seconds, [ and ] change round, comma and full stop change speed.

The layout

The radar now takes the full width, with the rosters and kill feed laid over its sides. A strip on top shows the score around a big round clock that counts buy time and live time. Rosters show health, armour, the weapon in hand and who carries a defuse kit. On screens narrower than 780 px the panels stack under a square map.

When the player you’re following already has a rendered reel, the replay links to it.

We also fixed a bug that had been there since the first version: first-half rounds showed the two teams on swapped sides. The score now counts rounds per team across halftime.

How to use it

  1. STEP 1Open an analysed match from your dashboard, a report or a player page, and press 2D replay.
  2. STEP 2Pick a round on the round bar and press play, or click a mark on the timeline to jump to a kill.
  3. STEP 3Press C for view cones, and click a name in a roster to follow that player.

Known limits

  • A cone is a fixed 90° shape drawn from the player’s view angle. It doesn’t know what was on their screen.
  • Positions are sampled 8 times a second and smoothed in between, so a very fast flick looks smoother than it was.
  • Replays built before Aug 28 don’t show weapons, armour, kits or the score, and can show first-half sides swapped.
  • A map needs a radar we have calibrated. On a map without one, the replay says so instead of drawing.
